FileZilla – Free FTP Program
8th May 2009 | Posted in: Useful Software 0

FileZilla is a free File Transfer Protocol desktop application that allows you to connect to your website and upload or download files in a similar way to Windows Explorer’s folder functions. Drag and Drop functions are available.
You can download a copy here or got to the FileZilla’s official website to download the latest version for your operating system.

Connecting to your website

  • Once you have installed FileZilla, click on File/Site Manager.
  • Click on the New Site button on the left of the window that appeared and type in the address of your website i.e. www.mydomain.com.
  • Make sure you have the Host, User ID and Password access details, also known as FTP connection details. You will likely get this from your hosting company or your web designer.
  • Type in the Host name, Select Normal for Logontype, type in the User ID and the Password and click on the Connect button. If all the details are correct then you should be connected to your web server shortly. If not, double check your internet connection and FTP details.
  • Depending on your hosting company, you might need to double click on the ‘public_html’ folder to gain access to the root of your web server.

Once in the root of your web server you will see all of the files that make up your website. It follows the same basic principles as Windows Explorer’s folder structure with files stored in folders. The window on your left will be your PC and the window on the right will be the website’s folders and files. You can navigate both the folder structure of both sides and drag and drop files from your PC to the website or from the website to your PC.
