Once you have installed the application, open up a MSWord document or MSExcel document and go to the Print document window. Once you attempt to print you will notice that a new printer with the name CutePDF Writer is now available. Once you print to the virtual printer you will be asked to provide the file name and location where the PDF should be saved. Once printed you will be able to open up the PDF like any other PDF created with commercial software. The benefit of this freeware version is that there are no ‘freeware’ watermarks on your document.

FileZilla is a free File Transfer Protocol desktop application that allows you to connect to your website and upload or download files in a similar way to Windows Explorer’s folder functions. Drag and Drop functions are available.
You can download a copy here or got to the FileZilla’s official website to download the latest version for your operating system.

Connecting to your website

Once you have installed FileZilla, click on File/Site Manager.

Click on the New Site button on the left of the window that appeared and type in the address of your website i.e. www.mydomain.com.

Make sure you have the Host, User ID and Password access details, also known as FTP connection details. You will likely get this from your hosting company or your web designer.

Type in the Host name, Select Normal for Logontype, type in the User ID and the Password and click on the Connect button. If all the details are correct then you should be connected to your web server shortly. If not, double check your internet connection and FTP details.

Depending on your hosting company, you might need to double click on the ‘public_html’ folder to gain access to the root of your web server.

Once in the root of your web server you will see all of the files that make up your website. It follows the same basic principles as Windows Explorer’s folder structure with files stored in folders. The window on your left will be your PC and the window on the right will be the website’s folders and files. You can navigate both the folder structure of both sides and drag and drop files from your PC to the website or from the website to your PC.

Take a look at the full documentation if you need any further help.

Most people have some sort of anti-virus program installed and running on their personal computers, but this is often not enough to protect their personal information for more subtle hidden programs called spyware.

Spyware is software that aims to gather as much personal information from you PC as possible and then send this confidential information to its creator across the internet. This malicious software usually runs invisibly, such as a virus, but does not cause any harm to your PC as a virus would do. This allows the spyware to run undetected on your PC, gathering personal data as time goes on. The spyware comes in two flavours:

Commercial Spyware
Spyware functionality that forms part of a normal commercial piece of software. The creator of the software might have had good intentions with trying to stay on top of user behaviour, but unauthorised gathering of information is still prohibited. Look for a ‘Certified Spyware Free’ sign on any software you buy or download.

Malicious Spyware
These applications are generally installed as part of another application. Usually the main application is from an unknown software company. Spyware can also be installed from web pages that ask you to install an ActiveX component or to run a specific program (.exe) online.

How to stop the spyware on your PC
Spybot (Search and Destroy) is a free software application to download and use. It is constantly updated with the latest spyware information and is easy to use. The program also offers a way to immunize your PC from possible infections in the future and lists web pages that are known for harbouring spyware installers. It also works properly with Windows Vista.

Software can cost a company a lot of money when you add up the cost of the Operating System such as Microsoft Windows and office communication software such as Microsoft Office. It is nice to know that there is some quality software that can be downloaded and used for free.

An anti-virus program is a must for any personal computer since running a virus-free computer has the following benefits:

The information on your PC cannot be corrupted by a virus

You personal information will not be captured such as banking login information or personal files

Your PC may run faster since there is no virus using your processing power

Your internet connection might run faster since a virus is not sending out data or downloading data

Your email program will not automatically send out emails with virus attachments and make it look like it comes from you

When you back your data up you will not back the virus up as well, thus setting yourself up for re-infection during a restore process

Your operating system (MSWindows) will not suddenly one day crash

How to get the free anti-virus program
The program is called AVG Free Edition and it is a lightweight application that updates itself automatically and ensures improved peace-of-mind. You can download the latest version of this program by visiting the home page of AVG…

Some general tips
Once you have installed your AVG application, let it update by connecting to the internet. The program will update it’s virus definition list as well as check for any updates on the program itself. It will check for updates on a regular basis and automatically install it without the need for your intervention. After the first update it is recommended that you do a complete scan of you pc. Also scan your memory sticks as virii can copy themselves onto them and autorun when the memory stick is inserted into a pc. AVG also check your incoming and outgoing emails and certifies it. That function adds a AVG text file attachment and/or adds a extra line of text to show that the email has been checked. If you, like me, do not want your email modified in any way then you can go to the options screen on the Email component and uncheck “Certify emails”.

What is it?
Photo Resizer is a software application to easily make photos (JPGs) small enough to email.

How does it work?
Download the program (.exe file) and place it on your desktop. Select one or many jpeg (.jpg/.jpeg file extension) images and drag and drop it onto the actual icon on your desktop. Copies of these files will be made in the same folder as the original images, but will be resized to smaller versions. By default, the program will convert it to 1024×768 pixel resolution images. To make it convert to smaller images, just change the ‘1024′ part of the default name to ‘640′. Now a landscape photo will be resized down to 640×480 pixel resolution at 72dpi (Screen resolution). You may also change it to a higher resolution such as 2048 if you wish.

When not to use it
Do not try to use it when you have files with a .gif, .png, .bmp etc file extension. It will also not help when the image is already smaller than the size you want to convert to. Do not convert photos to smaller sizes when they are to be used for print designs such as business cards, posters, pamphlets etc since those images need to be in a high as possible resolution for the printing process.

How do you get it?
Download the .zip file here and extract it to your desktop.

More functions
Photo Resizer has many more functions and you may view all the documentation at their official website…
