Adding a new Post or Page in Wordpress
12th May 2009 | Posted in: Wordpress Tutorials 0

The process of adding a new Post or Page into Wordpress is basically identical.
Make sure you have read about the difference between a Post and a Page.

Adding a Post
In this tutorial we will focus on creating a text-only post. We will cover adding an image and links in another tutorial.

Click on the Add New button under the Posts sidebar menu or select New Post from the quick launch drop down menu at the top right of the admin screen. This will now open the page where you can supply the information for the new Post.

Subject Line (Pages and Posts)
Type in a subject into the top Subject Line. The subject should be short and descriptive. Entering important keywords that relate to the post will help search engines index it properly.

The Content (Pages and Posts)
In the main content area you should type in your content. You may also choose to paste content from a MSWord document. You can use the Paste As Plain Text button. Paste the copied text into the window that popped up and click the Insert button. This will strip the MSWord formatting from the copied information and only paste pure text. MSWord formatting may create editing difficulties so we suggest pasting as pure text and formatting the content using the built-in editor.

Your content should be split into two logical parts. The first paragraph should be a hook/introduction piece. When the viewer reads this introduction then they should feel the urge to click on the Read More button to see the rest of the article. After the introduction text has been entered then press the Enter button to go to the next line. Click on the Insert More Tag and the Wordpress editor will add a light horizontal line in the editor. Once the article has been published then this More Tag will be replaced by a Read More link. The other purpose of the More Tag is to create summarized search results since only the introductions of a page or post will be shown in the search results. Now you may type the rest of the content after the More Tag.

Tags (Posts only)
You may enter Tags into the Post. Pages do not currently require tags. Tags are short keywords that are comma separated. These are associated with the post and can add additional searchable keywords to the post without appearing in the body of the post.

Categories (Posts only)
You may choose into which categories the new post will be placed into. You can check more than one category if you wish. So this post will then appear if that specific category has been clicked on at the main website.

Parent (Page only)
This dropdown box will allow you to stipulate that this new page will fall under another page. This is especially helpful if you have a multi-level menu system that can display all the menu options with dropdowns.

Order (Pages only)
The order is a numerical field that describes the order in which pages will appear in menus. These numbers may be 1, 2, 3 etc., but we suggest that you create them as 10,20,30 initially. This allows for some space in between the pages for new pages to be inserted. This will remove the need to renumber all the pages coming after this one. The Pages Widget control (not covered here) can be told to sort A-Z or by this order number that you have supplied.

Once these fields have been filled in then you may press on the Publish button to publish the Post or Page.

To edit a Post or Page is as easy as selecting to view the current Posts or Pages and then clicking on the name of that item. The same interface will allow you to edit the information.
